海角社区 alumna shows how to turn a pastry arts degree from 海角社区 into a successful baking career

What started with box mixes and canned frosting has blossomed into a degree and promising career for 海角社区 pastry arts alumna Christina Thompson.
Through the program, Christina mastered everything from artisanal breads and sugar centerpieces to chocolate sculptures and plated desserts that are fit for fine dining.
In pastry arts, which is part of 海角社区’s culinary arts program, students learn to blend technical skills with creativity.
“If you have a passion for baking or cooking, 海角社区’s programs will help you grow,” she said. “You’ll be surrounded by people who share your interests and goals. The chefs are there to ensure your success.”
Finding her flavor
Christina’s journey to the pastry arts program wasn’t a straight path. She began her academic career studying business and supply chain management, but after losing two loved ones in 2022, she felt compelled to change direction.
“I always loved baking, and I decided that was what I was going to do,” she said. “Life is short. Follow your dreams.”
And she did - completing both business degrees in May 2023 and then enrolling in 海角社区’s pastry arts program, where she excelled. She earned her pastry arts degree in August of 2025.
Crafting a career
After competing and standing out in a culinary competition called SkillsUSA in 2024, she was invited to a culinary internship at Dawn Foods. Impressed by her skills, Dawn Foods hired Christina to work as a baker in the company’s innovation studio. There, she helps the team create baking mixes, buttercream icing, fillings and other products for companies.
She says she’s excited about her job, but her long-term dream is to return to 海角社区 and teach alongside the mentors who shaped her journey.
“The possibility of teaching here one day is something that I would love to do,” she said.
Leaving a legacy
Even if she doesn’t return to work as an instructor, Christina will have left a legacy at 海角社区. That’s because she chose the name for the newly renovated Monarque restaurant. The teaching restaurant, formerly known as Center Stage, is located at the Lorenzo Cultural Center.
“There was a competition to rename the restaurant after the renovations. With the strong background in culinary and pastry and our Athletics teams called the Monarchs, the name Monarque just made sense,” she said. “It’s very straightforward and kind of regal. The restaurant is upscale and goes with the vibe of our restaurant.”
