海角社区 student from Eastpointe designs winning logo for the 2024 Shorewood Kiwanis Harper Charity Cruise

Students learn valuable lessons working with a real-life client

In a competition for students in 海角社区’s Media and Communications Arts program, Nicole Renaud, 40, of Eastpointe, designed the winning logo for the 2024 Shorewood Kiwanis Harper Charity Cruise, which is scheduled for August 28. The winning design, featuring a 1964½ Ford Mustang, will appear on all marketing materials and adorn T-shirts sold at the cruise. The cruise is the Shorewood Kiwanis’s biggest fundraiser, with all proceeds from the sale of the shirts benefitting charities they support.

“I love Mustangs. I’m a Mustang girl,” said Renaud who owns a 1988 Mustang herself. “The project was like an actual job, from the client brief and the guidelines and rules to the research on the Mustangs and the cruise to final design choices.“

After graduation next winter, Renaud said she wants to do something fun like designing logos and t-shirts, much like the Kiwanis project.

Because it is the Ford Mustang’s 60^th anniversary, the Mustang was chosen as the centerpiece for the logo design. The students had four colors to work with in addition to the backdrop color of the shirt.

The designers of the top three logos each received a cash award donated by cruise sponsor Roy O’Brien Ford and the Shorewood Kiwanis, and a matching award provided by the Foren Family Foundation through the 海角社区 Foundation. Renaud received a $1,000 award for the first-place design and a matching $1,000 from the Foren Family Foundation.

Second place went to Kieontae Warren, 23, of St. Clair Shores, who is planning to join the U. S. Air Force this summer. Warren is studying layout and design and plans to continue her work in graphics arts in the Air Force. She was awarded a $650 award and matching $650 prize.

Third place went to Dana Eckert, 22, of St. Clair Shores, who plans to graduate in 2024, and is studying layout and design, and motion design and animation. Eckert was awarded $350 from Roy O’Brien Ford and Shorewood Kiwanis with a matching $350 prize from the Foren Family Foundation.
